The St. Regis Chicago, a blue-glass tower of three shifting stems above the river

Light study

Flat light. Good for comparing materials, less kind to depth.

The glass takes the color of the sky. On a clear afternoon the west and south faces go saturated blue; at blue hour the stems flatten into a single luminous edge above the river.

The study applies a color treatment to the photograph. It is a way of looking, not a measured solar model.

Studio Gang’s riverfront tower, three stems of glass that shift as they rise — hotel and residences in Lakeshore East.

The St. Regis Chicago, formerly the Vista Tower, rises at 363 East Wacker Drive inside the Lakeshore East development. Jeanne Gang and Studio Gang organized it as three interconnected volumes of different heights. The outer stems step and lean just enough that the tower never reads as a single extruded box.

At 1,198 feet and 101 stories it is among the city’s tallest buildings, and the tallest structure in the world designed by a woman. The structural “blow-through” floors, left partly open, are part of how the tower meets Chicago wind — and part of why the silhouette breaks into light and dark bands.

The building is mixed use: a hotel and private residences, developed by Magellan Development Group. The structure was completed in 2020; this collection dates the profile to 2021, when the St. Regis presence on the river was fully in public view. Residences the studio can introduce are in the book, with a guide beside each one.

Neighborhood

Lakeshore East

Lakeshore East is built land, a planned neighborhood on former rail yards between the river, Columbus Drive, and the lake. The St. Regis is its tallest marker: a blue-green shaft you can read from the riverwalk long before you reach the door.
