One Bennett Park, a pale limestone-colored tower beside Lake Michigan

Flat light. Good for comparing materials, less kind to depth.

Morning light comes off the lake and washes the east face. By late afternoon the crown reads warmer against a western sky, and the stepped top stays legible after the street is in shadow.

The study applies a color treatment to the photograph. It is a way of looking, not a measured solar model.

A slender residential tower in Streeterville, dressed in the pale masonry and stepped crown of an earlier Chicago.

One Bennett Park stands at 451 East Grand Avenue, between the lake and the street grid of Streeterville. Robert A.M. Stern Architects designed it as a contemporary reading of the great apartment houses of the 1920s and 1930s, with Chicago precedents such as the Palmolive Building close at hand.

The tower is named for Edward H. Bennett, coauthor of the 1909 Plan of Chicago. Its asymmetrical crown steps in a way that favors the lake, and a lantern at the top gives the skyline a distinct silhouette. At the street, a limestone-toned base and separate arrivals distinguish the rental apartments from the condominiums.

It opened in 2019, after topping out in late 2018, and was Chicago’s tallest all-residential building at completion. The profile here is the building and its setting. Residences the desk can introduce are in the book, with a guide beside each one.

Neighborhood

Streeterville

Streeterville here is a narrow shelf between Lake Shore Drive and the older city. Bennett Park sits at the tower’s shoulder — a small civic lawn named for the same planner — so the building reads as both a skyline object and a neighbor to a park.
